When was the last time you stood in awe of God? Not just admiration or respect, but deep, soul-shaking reverence? The fear of the Lord is not about being afraid of God; it’s about recognizing His holiness, majesty, and power—and letting that knowledge shape how we live every single day.
What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?
Scripture calls us repeatedly to walk in the fear of the Lord. It’s described as the foundation of wisdom and the key to understanding:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10, NIV).
But fearing the Lord is more than acknowledging His greatness. It’s about aligning our lives with His will because we recognize who He is. It’s about surrendering our pride, agendas, and desires to the One who holds all authority. The fear of the Lord humbles us and keeps us in awe of His love and justice. It’s a reverence that moves us to obedience—not out of duty, but out of devotion.
The Fear That Transforms
When we walk in the fear of the Lord, everything changes. It affects how we speak, how we treat others, and how we approach challenges. It brings clarity to our decisions and strength to resist temptation.
Moses told the Israelites: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul”(Deuteronomy 10:12, NIV).
This kind of fear transforms how we see God and how we see ourselves. It reminds us that we are not the center of the universe—He is. It fills us with gratitude for His mercy and compels us to live in a way that honors Him.
The Fear of the Lord in a Fearful World
We live in a world consumed by fear—fear of failure, rejection, the future, and the unknown. But the fear of the Lord casts out all other fears. When we truly revere God, we understand that nothing is beyond His control.
As David declared: “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1, NIV).
Walking in the fear of the Lord gives us boldness. It frees us from the opinions of others and the anxieties of life. It anchors us in the truth that God is sovereign and good.
How Do We Walk in the Fear of the Lord?
Walking in the fear of the Lord starts with knowing Him. The more we study His Word, the more we understand His character. The more we pray, the more aware we become of His presence. It also requires a heart of surrender. Are we willing to let go of our plans, sins, and comforts to follow Him fully?
Finally, walking in the fear of the Lord means daily choosing to trust Him. It’s saying, “God, You are greater than my fears, greater than my desires, and greater than my understanding.”
A Prayer for the Fear of the Lord
Lord God Almighty,You are holy, righteous, and full of glory. Teach us to walk in the fear of You—not in dread, but in awe and reverence. Open our eyes to Your majesty, and fill our hearts with a desire to honor You in all we do. Forgive us for the times we have treated You casually or lived as though You were not Lord of all. Help us to trust You fully, to obey You completely, and to love You deeply. May our lives reflect the beauty of walking in reverence of You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
