Where the Roads Lead: The Village Church

Follow the road far enough and you may find a church. It may not look like the buildings many of us associate with Christianity. There may be no stage, elaborate sound system, or polished surroundings, but there are people gathering around the name of Jesus. Traveling with Apostle Rachel into village communities reminded us how much larger the Church is than what any one of us can see from where we stand. Across nations, languages, and circumstances, believers are worshiping the same Savior and carrying the same Gospel.

Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” That promise changes the way we understand sacred spaces. The presence of God is not validated by the size of a building or the resources surrounding a congregation. If Jesus is among His people, then something holy is happening there. We can easily confuse abundance of resources with abundance of God, but some of the most beautiful expressions of faith are found among people who may have little by worldly standards and yet possess a deep confidence in Christ.

These village churches reminded us that when we worship Jesus at home, we are joining a sound already rising from places we may never see. The Body of Christ stretches across roads, villages, cities, languages, and continents. Missions allows us, for a moment, to see another piece of that Body with our own eyes. We traveled far to encourage the Church, but returned encouraged ourselves, reminded that wherever believers gather around Jesus, we are never worshiping alone.
