Strengthening the Local Church: Lungujja

In Lungujja, Kampala, we gathered with Pastor Florence and her church for a time of ministry, worship, prayer, and the Word. There is something deeply meaningful about entering a local church in another nation and realizing that although the surroundings may be different, the Spirit of God and the mission of Jesus are the same. These are believers gathering week after week, praying for their families, reaching their community, growing in the Word, and carrying the Gospel in the place God has planted them. We may have traveled thousands of miles to stand among them for a moment, but they are the ones faithfully standing there when the moment is over.

Ephesians 4:11–12 tells us that Christ gave leaders to His Church “to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” That phrase—built up—has taken on deeper meaning for us on the mission field. Missions is not always about arriving somewhere to begin something new. Sometimes God sends us to pour into what He has already planted. We preach, pray, encourage, and share what He has placed in us, while also receiving from the faith and experience of those we have come to serve. The goal is never for a visiting ministry to become the center of the story; it is for the Body of Christ to become stronger and for Jesus to remain at the center of it all.

Our time in Lungujja reminded us that some of the most important Kingdom work happens after visiting missionaries have gone home. Pastor Florence and the local church remain—shepherding people, discipling believers, praying through difficulties, celebrating victories, and faithfully carrying the Gospel into their community. This is why we value relationships with local churches so deeply. We do not want merely to preach in a place and move on to the next destination. We want to honor, encourage, and stand alongside the people God has already positioned there. Sometimes missions means going where the Gospel has not been heard, and sometimes it means strengthening the hands of those who are already faithfully carrying it.
